Sympathetic Villains Wiki

Davy Jones is the secondary antagonist of Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, serving as a mentioned character in The Curse of the Black Pearl, the main antagonist of Dead Man's Chest, the main antagonist of At World's End and a cameo antagonist in Dead Men Tell No Tales. He also appears as a major antagonist in the 2018 open-world game, Sea of Thieves, specifically serving as the main antagonist of A Pirate's Life.

He is a sea monster and the dark lord of the Seven Seas who is loosely based on the old seaman's legend of Davy Jones' Locker. He is the cursed captain of the Flying Dutchman and the former lover of the sea goddess Calypso, who betrayed him and led him to cut out his heart in the first place, assigning him the role to ferry the souls of those who died at the sea into the afterlife, though Jones opted to recruit them into his immortal crew.

What makes him sympathetic[]

  • He fell in love with the sea goddess Calypso who gave him immortal life for a sacred duty to furry souls to the afterlife.
  • She swore that after ten years, she would meet him and they would spend one day together before he returned to his duties. However, when Jones returned to shore after ten years, Calypso failed to appear.
  • Jones turned the Pirate Brethren against her, saying that if she were removed from the world, they would be able to claim the seas for themselves. They assembled in the First Brethren Court and Jones successfully taught them how to imprison her into her human form. Despite betraying her, Jones still loved Calypso, and in guilt for what he had done, he carved out his own heart from his body.
  • His death scene is played for sympathy, as sad music plays in the background while he exclaims "Calypso" before falling backwards into the maelstrom.
