Lapis Lazuli is a major character in Cartoon Network's Steven Universe franchise.

She is a former Homeworld Gem and agent of Blue Diamond. She then later becomes good and lived on the barn with Peridot and is now an ally to the Crystal Gems and Steven. She eventually left Earth and took the barn with her into space in "Raising the Barn" after refusing to help Peridot and Steven.

However in the special known as "Reunited", Lapis returns to Earth to aid Steven and the Crystal Gems in fighting against Yellow and Blue Diamond, officially deciding to join the Crystal Gems. She was later poofed by Yellow Diamond. She eventually reappears in the Season 5 half-hour finale special, "Change Your Mind" to help Steven and Connie along with Bismuth and the newly-regenerated Peridot.

What Makes Her Sympathetic?[]

  • Her backstory is tragic, as she was caught in the crossfire of The Rebellion and got poofed by Bismuth. Homeworld mistook her for one of the Crystal Gems and imprisoned her within a magical mirror with the intention of interrogating her about her supposed comrade's whereabouts, and she remained trapped inside the mirror for thousands of years.
  • She initially harbored hatred and mistrust for the Crystal Gems since they knew she was in the mirror but never helped.
  • Lapis began to talk to Steven via the recordings of the mirror, and they became good friends. She wanted to get out of the mirror, and she told Steven how to help her out.
  • Eventually, Steven gets to see Lapis' side of her predicament. After getting a clear understanding of Lapis' dilemma, he heals her gemstone with his saliva, therefore restoring her to her true form.
  • Being by no means truly evil or outright malicious, she expresses an overwhelming desire to return home, going as far as to use one of the Earth's oceans to create a giant water construct for the purpose of using it as a lift in order to get closer.
  • Lapis is brought to Earth by Peridot and Jasper aboard the Gem Warship against her will. She is sent to Earth with Peridot as an informant, and it is seen that she has omitted facts from the crew for Steven's sake.
  • Having gone through several traumatizing events, Lapis gradually showed a more dour and deadpan side to her, especially after facing Peridot, whom she disliked for bringing her back to Earth, again.
  • Having acclimated to living at the barn, she is still dour to an extent but has helped renovate the barn and become comfortable living with Peridot,
  • When Steven mentions he was put on trial before Blue and Yellow Diamond, Lapis starts to panic and informs Peridot that they need to leave the Earth immediately, and abruptly hangs up on Steven.
  • After Ronaldo discovers the presence of the barn on the moon, Steven immediately goes to check it out. Lapis is surprised that he came and explains that she felt incredibly lonely once she left the galaxy. She also reveals she had been watching the others via an old Diamond observation device. When Steven convinces her to return to Earth, Lapis is convinced until Steven has a dream about the Diamonds and immediately perceives it as a vision of future events and flees, with Steven being too distraught to calm her down.
  • When the Diamonds attack, Lapis returns, reuniting with Steven and Peridot and swears her allegiance to the Crystal Gems, therefore redeeming herself.
  • Steven Universe: The Movie shows how happy and content she is as a Crystal Gem while helping build Little Homeworld, and "Why So Blue?" shows she has fully adopted the Crystal Gems mission of protecting worlds when she works to stop two other Lapis Lazulis from terraforming a planet.
