Sarah Kerrigan (also known as the Queen of Blades) is one of the main characters in the Starcraft series. At first she starts out as a Ghost operative working for the Confederacy, then she joins Arcturus mengsk's Sons of Korhal. On one of her missions she is captured and infested by the Zerg leading to her becoming one of the most infamous villains in the Koprulu Sector. Later, she is deinfested and ends up redeeming herself and saving the entire universe from Amon. Throughout the course of the games, she changes her role between hero, anti-hero, anti-villain and villain.

What makes her sympathetic?[]

  • Was a psionically gifted individual which caused her to have a lot of trouble communicating with other people at a young age and was introverted.
  • She couldn't control her powers and accidentally killed her mother and caused her father to be braindamaged which caused her to feel deep remorse.
  • Was kidnapped by the Confederate Government where she was trained to kill their political enemies and was subjected to brutal tortures and experiments at a young age.
  • She was rescued by Arcturus Mengsk an joined his rebellion because she genuinely believed in his cause and because she found a new purpose in her life.
  • During this time she falls in love with James Rynor and becomes intimate with him.
  • When Mengsk suggests using Psi-Emitters against populated planets, Kerrigan objects to the idea, showing that she has moral standards.
  • During one of her missions, Mengsk betrays her and leaves her behind to be killed by the Zerg.
  • Kerrigan is brainwashed and torturously infested by the Zerg which turns her into the Queen of Blades, a mass murdering monster who has killed billions of people.
  • When James Raynor deinfests her, she feels deep remorse about her actions as the Queen of Blades.
  • When she thinks that Raynor is killed by Mengsk's forces, she feels sadness and swears revenge against Mengsk.
  • Throughout Heart of the Swarm Kerrigan does some morally questionable things but she is portrayed as an anti-heroine because her reasons are understandable and she tries to be less ruthless than the former Queen of Blades (she lets a group of injured Dominion soldiers retreat, forbids Abathur to conduct experiments on test subjects and to kill Alexei Stukov, forbids her broodmothers to kill the crew of the Hyperion and tries to keep her Zerg away from civilian areas during the battle of Augustgrad to minimize civilian casualties).
  • She kills Amon (the main villain of the franchise whose ultimate goal is the end all life in the universe) and saves the entire universe in the process.
  • After she ascends as a Xel'Naga, she uses her powers to seed barren planets with life.
  • Because of Kerrigan's teachings, Zagara who is the new leader of the Zerg Swarm, tries to make peace with the Terran and Protoss instead of killing them.
