Seymour Krelborn is the main protagonist of all versions of Little Shop of Horrors.

Although not initially evil himself, Seymour ends up committing several crimes influenced by Audrey II's manipulation and promises of success, leading to him crossing several moral boundaries in order to feed the plant in hopes of keeping the flower shop afloat and gaining Audrey's affection.

He’s portrayed by Jonathan Haze in the 1960 film and Rick Moranis in the 1986 film.

What makes him sympathetic?[]

  • He is originally very poor and slightly mistreated by his boss Mr Mushnik.
  • He is shown to be in love with Audrey and is disgusted seeing her abused.
  • He lets Mr Mushnik in on his fame .
  • He is extremely remorseful and split on whether to kill anyone when Audrey II asks him too at first.
  • He seemingly can’t bring himself to kill Orin - as he lets him die instead rather than taking the bullet himself, signifying that he may have been remorseful.
  • Seymour tries to leave Audrey II at the end but is only stopped because Audrey II tries to eat Audrey.
  • Audrey dies in the 2 canon versions of Little Shop, adding a layer of tragedy to his character.
  • Seymour shows remorse over killing Mr Mushnik after the fact and this is when he starts debating on whether to keep Audrey II alive.
  • Attempts to stop Audrey II buds being sold worldwide.
  • Attempts to save the world by trying to fight Audrey II.
  • Actually succeeds in the Theatrical Ending, while sacrificing his life attempting to save the world in the original musical and attempting to kill Audrey II to no avail in the directors cut of the movie.

Trivia[]

  • Seymour wears boxers as is shown when Audrey II pulls down his pants.
  • In the 1960 movie, Seymour has parents rather than being an orphan.
  • While not explicitly shown, it’s implied Seymour may have killed more people than is shown as Audrey II grows to an enormous size as Seymour's fame and celebrity status grows. However, this is primarily a theory.
  • The film version of Little Shop of Horrors goes out of its way to make Seymour nicer - while still a villain for the majority of the film, he’s portrayed as much more remorseful and much less willing to follow Audrey II. Furthermore, in the original musical, he actually pushes Mushnik into Audrey II rather than just leading him to his death.
